چکیده

We study private-value auctions with n risk-averse bidders, where n is large. We first use asymptotic analysis techniques to calculate explicit approximations of the equilibriumbids and of the seller’s revenue in any k-price auction (k = 1, 2, . . .). These explicit approximations show that in all large k-price auctions the effect of risk-aversion is O(1/n2) small. Hence, all large k-price auctions with risk-averse bidders are O(1/n2) revenue equivalent. The generalization, that all large auctions are O(1/n2) revenue equivalent, is false. Indeed, we show that there exist auction mechanisms for which the limiting revenue as n −→ ∞ with risk-averse bidders is strictly below the risk-neutral limit. Therefore, these auction mechanisms are not revenue equivalent to large k-price auctions even to leading-order as n −→ ∞.

Revenue comparisons for auctions when bidders have arbitrary types

This paper develops a methodology for characterizing expected revenue from auctions when bidders’ types come from an arbitrary distribution. In particular, types may be multidimensional, and there may be mass points in the distribution. One application extends existing revenue equivalence results. Another application shows that first-price auctions yield higher expected revenue than second-pric...

Large common value auctions with risk averse bidders

We show that in large symmetric auctions with conditionally i.i.d. common values and CARA preferences, the second-price auction raises more revenue than the …rst-price auction. We also show by an example that the ranking does not extend to general symmetric risk-averse preferences.

Risk aversion and loss aversion in core-selecting auctions

Core-selecting combinatorial auctions have been introduced as an alternative to the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism because VCG results in payments that are not in the core with respect to bids, leading to unfair payments, unacceptably low revenues, and unstable outcomes. This raises an auction selection problem for an auctioneer deciding whether to employ a core-selecting auction or VCG ...

Bidders’ Choice Auctions: Raising Revenues through the Right to Choose

Sales of multiple real-estate properties are often conducted via a sequence of ascending auctions, giving the winner at each stage the right to choose one of the available lots. We show that when bidders are risk averse, such “bidders’ choice” auctions raise more revenues than standard simultaneous or sequential ascending auctions. We also report the results of laboratory experiments to investi...

Buy prices in online auctions : irrationality on the internet ? *

Buy prices are puzzling: it makes sense for a seller at auction to set a minimum bidding level (i.e., a reserve price), surely, but a maximum? We explore the use of maximum bidding levels (buy prices) in online auctions and provide a rational explanation for this seemingly irrational auction mechanism. We show that augmenting an English auction with a buy price can improve the seller’s profits ...
